A very funky looking retro inspired project. I've already backed the project and would recommend it to anyone who might be interested in gadgets, retro or otherwise.

Arduino + 8-bit Games = Gameduino

Ever wanted to make your own 8-bit video games? Well thanks to this nifty add-on for the Arduino, you’ll be able to create all sorts of 8-bit fun for yourself.

The Gameduino (http://excamera.com/sphinx/gameduino/)is a shield that plugs into an Arduino board, adding on an old-school graphics and sound – perfect for making your own retro-style games.

The board offers a 400×300 video output which works with any standard VGA monitor, and handles all sorts of retro graphical features like a 512×512 pixel character background, pixel-smooth X-Y scrolling backgrounds with wraparound, and a variety of foreground sprite capabilities for hundreds of sprites, as well as collision detection. The audio that’s on board is a 12-bit stereo synth, with 16 independent voices. Sure, that all sounds fancier than what your Atari 2600 or NES had on board, but it’s probably the best you’ll be able to do with today’s modern hardware.

You can grab the specs for building your own Gameduino here (http://excamera.com/sphinx/gameduino/making.html), but if you want one pre-made, head on over to Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2084212109/gameduino-an-arduino-game-adapter)and support the project. All pledges $53 (USD) and up will receive a Gameduino board once the project is funded and production ramps up.
